Description
"The dark brown in the design of this bowl basket is made from devil's claw, while the light brown comes from willow. The round bowl is 7-3/4 inches in diameter and 5 1/4 inches high. It is made by the Pima Indians of Arizona." The design on this coiled basket is a double striped geometric pattern. The black that forms the black part of the design is taken from the split seed pod of the devil's claw (Martyana louisana) plant, harvested in late summer but before the first frost. The willow that forms the light part of the design is harvested in March as the new shoots form. The bark is removed immediately and it is split into slender, uniform splints. There are 5 coils and 13 stitches per inch.
