"A reddish-brown manzanita diamond design trims the sides of this 4 1/2 inch in diameter basket, woven of mountain grass on a base of cedar bark. Black drakes, made from maiden-hair fern, are woven into the cover, and the same material is used for lines circling the base. This basket was made and given to me by Mrs. Katie Colfax Hunter, a Neah Bay, Washington, Indian from the Mocah reservation. " Makah Baskets. The base of the basket is made of cedar bark and the body of the basket is woven of very fine mountain grass. Popular motifs include the drake duck and the whale, as the Makah are whalers. The black designs are made with maiden hair fern. The other colors in the design are made with dyed grass. There are 23 rows of 16 stitches per inch.
