DescriptionBowl. An oval shaped bowl, 5 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide in the shape of a water bird. The head of the bird is molded into one of the lengthwise ends of the bowl which is entirely of black, unpolished pottery, except for about two inches of the rim and the bird's head, which is polished. This bowl comes from the Santa Clara Pueblo.
"This jest black is not derived from paint. When the pottery is to be fired, a wood fire is built. The pottery is carefully buried in wood and powdered animal manure is sprinkled onto the wood. The fire is lighted, and the pottery is fired until it has reached the proper stage of blackness." - From Cleora's Guide to the collection.
